Lev Vygotsky's social learning theory presents the notion of the Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD). It demonstrates the best way for a student to learn, which is the gap between what they can do on their own and what they can do with help.

The ZPD is a list of things a student can't do on their own but can do with help from someone who knows more (MKO), such a teacher or a friend. Vygotsky said that here is where real learning happens because people can communicate to one other and ask for guidance, which helps them get better at what they do.


This idea has a major effect on how we teach. It means that teachers should pay attention to the ZPD, which is the level just above the student's current level. Teachers achieve this by giving students little amounts of guidance, such tips or examples, to help them finish their work. The teachers keep taking away the support as the children get better at it.

A teacher may, for example, work through a math issue with the class before letting the students tackle it on their own. The ZPD is also used in group learning, where students discuss about ideas with each other. Knowing the ZPD helps teachers construct lessons that are just the right amount of demanding. Students don't learn anything from assignments that are too simple, and they become furious when activities are too hard. The ZPD framework helps teachers make lessons that are just suitable for each student and keeps them interested by focusing on their potential instead of simply where they are right now. This helps students learn new skills better by helping them recall what they learned.
